Most of the pre-built consoles we see use a familiar formula: Intel CPU, Nvidia graphics card. Therefore, there was the opportunity to test the HP Pavilion Gaming Desktop 690, which uses AMD silicon on both levels: Ryzen CPU and Radeon GPU. At $779 as tested (in HP spec model 690-0020), this PC configuration packs some impressive value. For less money than a single Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 Founder’s Edition graphics card, you get a compact desktop that can play the latest AAA titles at mainstream 1080p resolution with picture quality settings. That’s the most you can ask for from a budget gaming PC, and just one reason why this HP model is a strong choice for the most bang for your buck. That said, the lack of an SSD in this setup puts a damper on things; This computer would otherwise have received an Editors’ Choice award.

The HP Pavilion Gaming Desktop 690 is a jazzed-up version of HP’s mainstream Pavilion compact towers. It’s not big. The 16-gallon case is about half the size of a typical mid-tower. It measures 13.3 inches long, 10.9 inches tall, and 6.7 inches wide, and weighs about 11.5 pounds.

Aside from the green-themed ports on the front, the Pavilion Gaming Desktop 690 has a quiet appearance when closed. When turned on, a green light bar divides the space vertically.

On its left is a slim DVD burner with a tray, and on its right is a power button, a combo audio jack, an SD card reader, two USB Type-A 3.0 ports, and a USB Type-C 3.1 port. This array of front-accessible ports is as solid as you’d expect in a mainstream or budget PC.

The housing is mostly made of metal. However, construction does not inspire confidence; Case materials are thin and feels hollow.

The low performance CPU cooler and rear 80mm fan are visible, but the rest of the internals are hidden behind the hard drive mounting plate you can see here. The panel is held in place with a few non-standard knurled screws. They are certainly portable, but it’s a hassle you shouldn’t face.

Removing the drive board gives access to the motherboard’s two DDR4-2666 DIMM slots (they support 32GB of RAM in a two-16GB DIMM configuration) and one M.2 Type-2280 (80mm) slot for SSDs, here empty. . An 8GB memory module is installed in this test unit. (DIMMs mean no dual-channel functionality, but on the plus side you can upgrade to 16GB without paying for 8GB.) The only storage drive is a slow 3.5-inch 1TB hard drive.

The Radeon RX 580 graphics card takes up a good portion of the internals. It’s a dual-slot card but smaller than most cards I’ve seen based on the RX 580 chip, chosen or designed to fit into the compact chassis of the Pavilion Gaming Desktop 690. (See our review of another Radeon RX 580 card, from XFX, which should offer similar performance.)

Internal wiring is surprisingly minimal. The multicolored cables coming from the power supply look normal, but unless the side panel on the desktop is turned off, you’ll never see them. The power supply in our unit, rated at 400 watts, has a knotty 80 Plus Platinum rating.

I can’t complain about the unfinished look of the metal back at this price. Microphone, line-in and line-out audio jacks are dots in the upper left. Further down the motherboard are the closed video ports (this setup has a dedicated graphics card, so they’re disabled), an Ethernet port, two USB Type-A 2.0 ports, and four USB Type-A 3.0 ports. .

The Radeon RX 580 graphics card has one HDMI video output and three DisplayPort video ports; Keep this in mind (and the need for an adapter) if you’re still rocking a monitor with only DVI and VGA inputs. A bottom-mounted power supply means you won’t have a power cord hanging from above.

It’s not hard to find a pre-built desktop that matches the performance of the Pavilion Gaming Desktop 690-0020. However, it’s a little hard to find one that does this at this price. The Lenovo Legion Y520T mid-tower was the closest I could find. It offers a faster Core i5-8400 hexa-core processor at the same price, but it only takes a step down on the graphics card with a GeForce GTX 1050 Ti 4GB. You need a GeForce GTX 1060 to match the Radeon RX 580 in HP.

The AMD Ryzen 5 2400G (Opens in a new window) is a quad-core processor that’s powerful enough for general-purpose tasks. It’s an interesting chip because it’s one of the few Ryzen processors with a built-in graphics solution. However, this functionality is unused in this Pavilion Gaming Desktop 690-0020 configuration; Especially the Radeon RX 580 graphics card in the PCI Express slot performs those duties.

The single-channel 8GB memory configuration in our test unit is sufficient for daily use. For today’s AAA titles you need at least; Don’t plan on multitasking too much while you’re playing. Memory is upgradeable, as I noted earlier, potentially no waste.

That 1TB hard drive, though: I didn’t need benchmarks to tell me it was the weak spot for performance in this setup. That’s painfully slow compared to a solid-state drive (SSD). Windows 10 updates took forever. Things got a little better after I uninstalled the McAfee antivirus test I had installed, but there’s no getting away from the fact that in 2018, a hard drive is far from ideal for an operating system drive. Once you use a bootable SSD, you can never go back. And in addition, the hard drive significantly held back the HP’s performance in some of our benchmarks.

HP includes a basic USB keyboard and mouse with this desktop. They’re not fancy things, as is ideal for bundled peripherals, but they work just fine. If you want to be serious about your gaming, you still want to invest in something better. (To get started, check out our picks for the best gaming keyboards.)

Active cooling exhaust in the Pavilion Gaming Desktop 690 comes from an 80mm fan, a power supply fan and a fan-style cooler on the graphics card. Under most operating conditions, these three fans are barely audible. In fact, the spinning wires and chattering noises from the 1TB hard drive are more noticeable.

The 80mm exhaust fan and CPU cooling fan become noticeable when workloads, such as games, kick in. Their collective motor noise is low and unlikely to attract complaints. However, it is one of those shades that is most noticeable when it fades; As soon as you stop playing and the fans turn down, you realize that the room is very quiet. It’s HP isn’t quiet at full tilt, but it’s also not loud enough to be a deal breaker, to my ears.

The chilling performance of Rise of the Tomb Raider’s 30-minute duration was significant. At their peak I recorded the Ryzen 5 2400G CPU reaching 77°C and the Radeon RX 580 at 85°C. Both are within acceptable limits.

PC Labs has recently refined and modernized its benchmark methodology, so our pool of benchmark results isn’t as extensive for budget PCs as it has been in recent years. That’s why many of the machines on these comparison charts are much more powerful and expensive than the HP Pavilion Gaming 690-0020. (Then again, I always like to root for the underdog.)
