I’m going to answer that question today and divide the piano into three categories: technique, playing by ear, and learning songs.

I will be very specific to answer this question, and I will explain how you can get certain results if you train for a few weeks, using certain practices.

At the end of this blog post, I’ll give you a realistic step-by-step game plan to learn all these aspects of the piano in a limited amount of time.

Gregg Fraley Innovation (gfi)

How long does it take to acquire solid piano technique? First, we need to define what this means using some criteria. I define strong technique as playing all 12 major scales at 90 beats per minute, sixteenth notes.

Does this mean you have mastered the technique? Of course not, but you have SOLID technique. You have the finger strength, dexterity and coordination to play many songs.

How long does it take to get there? For 12 weeks, you will exercise for 10 minutes 5-6 days a week. This doesn’t mean you can skip 5 days and do an hour of exercise on the last day. He knows that a piano player doesn’t count.

Also, if you want to have rock solid technique in 12 weeks, you need to use “accelerated learning techniques”. Just playing the balance over and over again will not get you results quickly. I have four accelerated piano lessons in my free course, Become a Piano Superhuman.

Can you really get strong technique in 12 weeks? Yes, yes, you can. I’ll explain why a little later in this blog post.

How long does it take to play the piano well by ear? By “good,” I don’t mean you’re an expert at playing by ear, I mean you can learn pop music by ear in about 10 minutes.

There are basically two time frames to get to this point. If you can sing songs with your hands, it takes about 4 months to play the piano well by ear. If you are a complete beginner and have never played hand to hand before, it will take you about 6 months as you have to learn other skills first.

First, as a technique, you need to practice 10 minutes a day, 5-6 days a week.

Second, I learned this the hard way, you have to use strategic exercises and drills, you can’t just wing it.

I also have a game with ear exercises in the free course. I took a class in college that used some of these exercises and learned very quickly. I used to play songs by ear during the semester.

How long does it take to learn piano songs well? It’s hard to decide because it depends on how difficult the songs you’re trying to play are.

There is no exact numerical way to determine this, so I found something that works well. If a random person hears you play and says, “You’re good at piano,” you’re “good at singing.”

How long does it take? About 6 months. At this time, you should exercise for 20 minutes a day, 5-6 days a week. And this requires a very different practice, breaking your songs down into parts and focusing on the parts that really need work and will push you. Don’t spend half your practice time playing simple pieces you know – that won’t get you the results you want in 6 months.

Before I go ahead and show you a specific game plan for learning piano, I need to talk to people who think that learning piano fast is “too good to be true.” Having worked with many students, I know the amazing results that can be achieved with focus and consistent practice. But the biggest mistake people make is not following through on the little details!

Many students come to my class and show me that their balance is not what it should be. They say they train 20 minutes a day, 6 days a week, but when I dig under the skin, I always find something. Do you know what it is? Because they don’t follow the list. They trained for 3 days instead of 6 and didn’t realize how many days they ran.

Another thing that often happens is that people don’t use stopwatches to track their exercise time. I used to do the same thing and over time these 10 minute workouts reduced to 6 or 7 minutes. It is not the same.

If you are consistent and time it right, you will get the results I am sharing with you in this blog post.

Another thing people say is that “everyone is different”. Yes, it’s true, but they’re not that different. Even if someone is a bit slow to learn piano, if they practice focusing consistently on unfamiliar parts, they won’t fall behind too much over time. It may take a month or two, but it doesn’t take twice to learn.

It may take a little longer or shorter for you, but it will be the same time as I mentioned.

If you spend 6 months learning piano, playing scales 10 minutes a day, playing headphones 10 minutes a day, and singing 20 minutes a day:

Don’t have 40 minutes a day? Let’s say you only have 20 minutes. You will probably spend 3 months focusing on technique and playing by ear. In another three months, you can focus on singing. Then you cycle both and after a year you will be fine 3.

Remember, it’s all in the details, using the right techniques, exercises, and strategies to speed up your practice. To learn more about these, check out my free course, “Become a Piano Superhuman”.
