When I talk about this, I often get into unbelievable situations: People protest, please, of course you can’t go to the store and buy antibiotics, right?

Meanwhile, Twitter follower Jonathan Sellman, MD, an epidemiologist in the Twin Cities, heard me talking about it with MPR News’ Kerri Miller and couldn’t stand a caller who didn’t believe this was happening , and decided to show it doing so. He went to a local farmer’s store, took a few shots of antibiotics, and tweeted the photo. He was quickly supported by Dr. Tim Johnson, a professor who studies antibiotic resistance, and Peter Bornstein, MD, MBA, another infectious disease physician; both provided images and links.

In response to the doubts, some doctors tweeted pictures showing drugs like penicillin and cephalosporins available on the shelves of agricultural supply stores.

Additionally, you can easily buy containers of cephalexin, an antibiotic commonly used to treat ear and urinary tract infections in humans, under the Fish Flex brand on Amazon and other retailers.
We certainly don’t recommend anyone buying these types of veterinary antibiotics, and we don’t want to recommend that you use them without first seeing a doctor. Misuse of antibiotics can lead to dangerous outcomes, such as using the wrong medicine.

But if humans use antibiotics only with caution under the guidance of a healthcare professional, shouldn’t the same be true for cows and pigs?
