Classic Grilled Cheese Recipe
There is a purpose to arranging your ingredients, 1) the cheese melts, 2) the bread doesn’t burn, and 3) things don’t fall apart.
This will vary depending on the shape and thickness of your bread, the type and thickness of your cheese, and how hot your pan is.
You will usually find that about 5 minutes each way is enough. You can turn the sandwich a few times at the end to ensure even cooking.
Remember, you don’t want your pan to get too hot; the bread will burn until the cheese melts. You also don’t want to make the bread, cheese, or other toppings too thick.

You’ll know your baked cheese is ready when the bread is lightly browned and all the cheese has melted.
While there are great, high-quality pre-sliced loaves out there, they just don’t cut it for the “gourmet” effect this recipe is aiming for. If possible, I recommend getting artisan bread from a local bakery.

Place the sandwich on the preheated griddle and cook for about 5 minutes, making sure it doesn’t burn (maybe not at such a low heat, but cooking times vary from kitchen to kitchen). It’s tempting, but don’t touch the sandwich. If you don’t like your grilled cheese extra smooth, then go for it.
After the first five minutes, carefully remove the sandwich with the sandwich and cook on the other side for another 5 minutes.
Flip each side and cook for another two minutes. The bread should be golden brown and the cheese should be nice and starting to melt.
After about 15 minutes of cooking over medium-low heat, raise the heat to medium and watch the sandwich carefully, turning frequently, until the bread is heated through to a golden brown.
