I’m Tutor Phil, and in this tutorial I’m going to show you how to write a great body paragraph in an expository essay (also called a position essay or an argumentative essay). This is the most common type of college essay writing.

How To Write A Strong Body Paragraph

A body paragraph contains a topic sentence, explanation, and examples. To write it, think of the paragraph as a mini-essay in which the topic sentence is a thesis statement and explanations and examples are supporting.

To be clear, an argumentative essay is similar to a persuasive, expository or so-called opinion essay. This is simply an essay in which you present a statement or argument and then support it with evidence.

If you follow the paragraph structure I show you, your essays will be incredibly inspired.

Let me show you the three-part structure of a body paragraph that you will write in an essay.

Parts Of The Introductory Paragraph

A topic sentence (also known as a main sentence) is the first and most common sentence in a body text. It should briefly summarize the content of the paragraph. Thus, it tells the reader what the main point of the paragraph is.

Treat the topic sentence like a thesis for your paragraph. Everything below should support it.

This is the part where you explain the point you just made in the topic sentence. This is your chance to show your knowledge on the subject.

But still this part should be somewhat general. Here are the different types of information you can include in the explanation section:

This is the last part of the paragraph where you present the most specific pieces of evidence. Examples include dates, names, events, geographic locations, and other specific information.

The illustrations are interesting for both the writer and the reader. This is an easy way to add quality content to your essay. And readers love it because it contains stories and fun facts.

“Abundant entertainment makes New York an incredibly fun city. The variety of things to do is incredible, and many venues are open all night. Broadway and off-Broadway shows, concert halls, comedy clubs and all kinds of live music venues are at your fingertips. ‘Hamilton’ the musical last year Started with great success. People absolutely love it. Tickets for the show usually have to be bought in advance, my uncle and cousin bought them on the street and arrived that night. They left stunned and wanted to see the show again during a visit to the same city.”

First, it starts with a topic sentence that says NYC is a great place if you like entertainment. This is the main point of the paragraph.

Next comes a sentence which is an explanation. It is about the variety and availability of locations. There are many of them and they are always open.

“Despite the best efforts of local government, shark attacks still occur. Local police, in cooperation with marine scientists, have built underwater fences to protect the beach. They warned local beachgoers to be careful and stay within clear limits when swimming. Sheriff Peterson personally greeted beachgoers for several days and warned of danger. Despite all efforts, there were two shark attacks last week. A middle-aged man was bitten, rushed to the hospital and recovered shortly after. A small boy survived the attack two days later but had to be treated for serious injuries. .”

It’s a bit more complicated because it has two parts: the efforts of local authorities to prevent shark attacks and the attacks that occur.

As long as your paragraph moves from general to specific and has a solid topic sentence, you should be fine. This is what I mean.

Let’s say you have a wonderful logical explanation. But you have no examples. Or you’re running out of space and don’t want to add an example.

That’s fine. You don’t need to include an example for every point you make. That said, examples are some of the most engaging and desirable parts of your essay. So add them whenever possible.
