I have received many comments and emails from readers who have lost channels after rescanning their TV for channels. And it happened to me too!
Some TVs allow you to add channels manually in the settings menu. My old Sony Bravia will, but my new Samsung won’t. Consult your TV’s manual.
If it doesn’t work, and if you have an old TV, it may not pick up virtual channels properly. This happened to my 2008 Sony TV.

I suddenly lost my local NBC station due to “FCC repacking”. As you can imagine, I scanned again. But after that, I lost a bunch of other channels, including my local CBS and NBC stations. what happened??
Well, I went to the station finder and saw that my local CBS station, normally KCBS on channel 2.1 on my TV, had been moved and had RF channel 34. Well, I know modern TVs have the ability to map the channels physically. RF channel on a tuner channel independent of the TV, so the channel number you know and prefer never changes, even if the physical frequency changes.
So, in theory, I should be able to watch KCBS on channel 2.1, but for that, I tried tuning into their physical RF channel, 31.1, and voila!! KCBS was there!!
I actually spoke with the head of engineering at KCBS and he told me that some older Sony TVs do not have the ability to map the RF channel to a separate display channel. So on my TV I now need to find KCBS on channel 31.1 instead of channel 2.1.
Why Did My Broadcast Tv Channels Disappear?
To find out if this is the case for you, go to Station Finder and enter your postcode. Click on the call letter of the station you missed and search for the RF channel.
Try tuning your TV to this channel plus .1 or .3. or another tenth in this channel. So in this example, the RF channel is 31, so you should try to tune to 31.1, 31.3, etc. (tenths are more often odd numbers).
If you go back to the original channel of that station (2.1 in my case), your TV may be able to “uplink” the new channel to the old channel shown. It didn’t work in my case, but I’m glad to have CBS again, even if I have to get it on channel 31.1 instead of 2.1.
If your TV doesn’t allow you to add channels manually and you’re using an indoor antenna, you can try this trick:
Here’s How To Restore Reception With Your Tv Antenna When Stations Change Frequencies
Let’s say you are using a planar antenna hanging on the wall. Open a nearby window and hang up the antenna, point it at a TV tower in your area, then do a scan. You may need a longer coaxial cable.
This is an easy way to temporarily give your TV the best possible reception during a scan. When you’re done, put the antenna back on. Once the antenna returns to its normal position, you won’t be able to tune in all the channels, but at least they will be in your TV’s memory so you can experiment with the antenna position.
Another thing you can try is updating your TV’s firmware (ie the software that runs inside your TV), especially if it’s an older TV.
Check your TV manufacturer’s website for updates. Sometimes you can download it to a USB stick and then plug it into your TV to update.

After that, try scanning again. You can recover the channels. Or, if your channels were on different channels (like mine), they may be assigned to the correct channels after the update.
Google the call letter or channel name you’re having trouble finding on their website. They’ll often have a contact form that you can email if you’re having trouble with reception.
Surprisingly, when I did this, they actually responded and were helpful! One actually told me about the RF channel change mentioned above. They may have other advice on where to point the antenna and whether it’s worth getting a better one.
