Chromebooks have gained popularity during the pandemic as parents have snapped up these affordable laptops for kids who are now studying at their kitchen tables or bedrooms. And while that demand has waned in recent quarters, there are millions of Chromebooks in circulation, and chances are there are a few things you don’t know about these Chrome OS-based devices.
Take screenshots for example. Since Chromebooks are web-based laptops, there aren’t as many options for third-party display tools as there are for Windows or macOS. Chrome extensions are plentiful, but the fastest way to capture what you see on your screen is to use Chrome OS’s built-in tools. Here’s how it works.

Select Screenshot from the menu that appears at the bottom of the screen. Choose whether you want to capture the entire screen, a partial screenshot, or a screenshot in a window. If you’re using an external keyboard that doesn’t have a View button, press Shift + Ctrl + F5 to go to the screenshot menu.
With the launch of Chrome OS 89 (opens in a new window) in March 2021, Google added a screenshot tool to the Quick Settings menu on Chromebooks.

Screenshots are also saved in the “Downloads” folder for later use. To change the move location, press Shift + Ctrl + Show Windows, select Options > Select Folder, select the desired folder, and future screenshots will be sent there.
Since Chromebooks have limited hard drive space (opens in a new window), one option is to back up those images to Google Drive, where they’ll be available on all devices.
