Everyone has scrap wood lying around in the store or in the garage. Why not use it? Making a bird is an easy woodworking project that parents can get their young children involved in. Follow the steps below to learn how to build a birdhouse with everyday materials.
Set Of 2 ‘make Your Own Bird Box’ Kits
Using a miter saw and the included cutting guide, cut pieces of 1×6 board and ¼” thick plywood to size. Mark a center point along the top edge of the front and back walls. From the center point, snap each top corner at a 45 degree angle to create a peak.
On the front board, mark the center of the board width 3.5 inches from the top of the board. Using a hole saw, paddle attachment, or jigsaw, make a hole about 1¾ inches in diameter.
Place two “sides” on the edge with the 4¾” high edge facing up. Apply glue to each edge. Place the front of the birdhouse on edge so that the sides of the front are flush with the outer surface of each wall. Using a nail puller, drive 1¼-inch nails through the bird’s snout and into the edge of each side wall.
Rotate layout. Apply adhesive to the back edge of each side wall. Lay the back of the bird on its side. Drive 1¼-inch nails through the back and into the side walls.

Apply wood glue to the bottom edge of all four walls. Position the stand so that its back end is flush with the back wall, and the front end protrudes beyond the front wall of the bird, creating a ledge. Nail through the base and into each adjacent wall.
Apply wood glue to the top of the front and back walls. Place the smaller roof panel in place, flush with the edge of the top. Nail the roof to the front and back walls to secure it in place. Install the second ceiling panel, overlapping the open top edge of the first panel. Nail the roof to the front and back walls to complete the assembly.
Fill all nail holes with outdoor wood filler. Let it dry. Gently wipe the assembly. Apply two coats of facade paint or stain.
Drill a hole on each side of the roof along the top. Push a piece of twine through the hole, then pull it out of the front hole with pliers. Tie the end in a knot, and then pull it inside the roof. Repeat on the opposite side to create a loop. (Alternatively, attach an outdoor hook or ditch the hanger altogether and place the bird on a sturdy surface.)
