Newport’s view is that instead of prioritizing a career that we think we want, it should be more practical. He suggests that any career can be fulfilled if it provides us (at least in the long term) with three key factors:

These factors are not unique to Newport’s work – they are also discussed in Dan Pink’s book Drive. These are essentially modified versions of the three basic needs identified in self-determination theory, a psychological theory of human motivation and personality.
After establishing these factors, Newport examines their practical implications for your career. He explains that diving into a career you feel passionate about often means you lack one or more of three factors. If the reasons are not met in the end, you may find the job unsatisfying, even if you started with a strong passion for it.
The book is definitely somewhat biased towards Newport’s own field – academia. Artistic pursuits, while discussed, feel a little neglected. Depending on your background and personal views, you may not agree with some of his views.
Whether you agree completely, slightly, or not at all with Newport’s view of careers, you’ll likely find his practical advice useful. He gathered some useful tips for finding fulfillment in your career from some interesting case studies and from his own experience.
