Whether you bought a new or used car, it is important to know the tint percentage on the car’s windows. This is especially important if you want to further tint your windows and ensure that the tint complies with local law enforcement regulations.
Tint You Can See Out But Not In
There are many reasons why you might want to tint your windows, from climate control to UV protection or even crash safety. But how can you be sure what the tint percentage actually is and if it is a legal percentage?

We will guide you through the process of how to accurately determine and calculate the tint percentage of car windows.
This will vary depending on the country and region where you live. Currently, the darkest legal tint film allowed in Western Australia is 35% on front windows and 20% on passenger and rear windows. You can read more about Western Australia’s legally darkest window tint here.
The tint percentage represents the amount of visible light that can pass through the tinted glass. So if your window tint is 5% then it is only letting in 5% of the light and will therefore be a very dark colour. If it is 80%, it will be significantly lighter and allow 80% of visible light to pass through.
There are two types of shades you should consider. The names say it all, really. When your car was built, it came with factory tinted windows. An aftermarket shade is when you apply a second coat after production.

This also means that the factory tint is built into the actual windows and therefore cannot be removed, you can only upgrade it with an aftermarket tint. It’s important to keep both in mind when calculating your car’s overall window tint percentage.
Another thing to keep in mind is that regardless of whether it’s a factory or aftermarket tint, chances are your rear windows will be darker than the front, so always consider the two separately.
The first thing you need to do is check what percentage of your windows are tinted. In other words, the factory color it came with as we explained earlier.
Then, once you know the VLT percentage of your original windows, multiply the VLT by the film you have applied or will apply to the window. So, for example: if the factory VLT is 60% and the film VLT is 7%, the formula to calculate the final total color percentage would be: 7×60/100 = 4.2%.

If you can’t find out what your car’s factory color ratio is, you can always find a color meter to check the ratio. Simply lower the window halfway and then measure the color with a meter.
Realize your shade is too dark? There are several ways to remove the paint from your windows from the comfort of your own garage.
The first step would be to make sure your windows are clean and free of stickers. Then slowly start removing the paint by lifting it with the blade, starting from the corner of the window. Just a tip, maybe try this on one of the smaller windows to avoid ugly errors.
Make sure you have an extension cord ready so you can reach the car with a hair dryer. On the highest setting, blow out the corner of the window with a hair dryer until the heat causes the paint in the corner to curl. This will allow you to carefully remove the paint layer.
How To Make Windows Private At Night
Whichever method you choose, there will most likely be some glue left on the windows. Using a spray bottle, spray the soap and water mixture on the windows, then scrape off the residue with a paper towel. Alternatively, you can use a hair dryer to heat up the residue and then scrape it off with a blade.
Finally, spray a generous amount of glass cleaner on the windows and clean them with paper towels. Your windows should now be free of monitoring.

Protective glass (sometimes called “factory tint”) is a special type of glass that is tinted by the automaker at the factory. Instead of a window film, the glass itself is tinted and usually does not have high heat reflective properties. Most manufacturers of Privacy Glass measure between 22% – 28% VLT (Visible Light Transmission).
Many new cars come with protective glass and it is usually found on all windows except the windshields on two doors and the windshield. This serves to promote better safety by allowing you to see properly (especially at night) and helping the police identify drivers.
Privacy glass, as the name suggests, provides more privacy for you, your passengers and your property. It also blocks some of the sunlight.
Different Types Of Car Window Tint Explained
Most cars with privacy glass are installed at the factory as part of the manufacturing process. However, if you later decide that you want to install privacy glass on your car, you can contact the factory to have the glass manufactured and installed.
Custom screen protectors after you buy your car will be very expensive, which is why many choose our tinted paint instead.
At We Tint Windows we offer a special tinting service called private tinting. This is the closest to the appearance of the factory-made protective glass.
If you’re concerned about harmful UV rays affecting your skin or your car’s interior, we also offer a UV-clear tint that goes over your windshield.
