What Acne Spots On Your Face Mean, According To Science
Mix up your own spot treatments to prevent picking with Hydrocolloid patches to keep your routine simple and gentle.
Some crashes will show up and heal within a few days – if you’re lucky. Other episodes (cyclic type) seem to last forever or come back with a vengeance over and over again. If the latter type always seems to creep up on your chin and jawline, you’re not alone. Chin lesions (such as dark spots, white spots, congestion, or swelling) are often caused by hormones. Scars in this area are often deep, painful, difficult to remove, and often do not respond to conventional acne treatment. But if you have the right knowledge, acne is not necessarily scary.
That’s why along with esthetician Kerry Benjamin and dermatologist Jeremy Fenton, MD, Schweiger Dermatology Group; Melissa Kanchanapoomi Levine, MD, NYC Board Certified Dermatologist and Founder of Inner Dermatology; and Ruth Tedaldi, MD, a Boston dermatologist and host of The Gist, for their best insight into getting and keeping a clear chin.
So how do hormones affect your skin? To answer, Benjamin gives us a quick biology lesson on the menstrual cycle. The 28-day menstrual cycle can be divided into three parts. In the first seven days, the level of estrogen is high. In 7 to 14 days, estrogen begins to decline. Day 14 to Day 28 is when estrogen is at its lowest. Benjamin is most likely to occur 7 to 10 days after your period because that’s when estrogen, which helps keep your skin clear, is at its lowest. During this period, testosterone increases, which increases fat production. Progesterone levels also increase, reducing your pores. So you have low levels of skin-cleansing hormones and excess oil and pores.
Treating Acne In Adult Males
If your rash doesn’t respond to topical treatment, talk to your doctor about different oral medication options. Depending on your specific situation, you may be prescribed birth control pills or spironolactone (drugs that block androgens, like testosterone) to control hormones and oils or antibiotics to attack bacteria.
That’s because, according to Benjamin, acne can be hormone-related, with all the things you eat that can affect your hormones. Fenton says a change in diet, especially heavy dairy, can make a big difference to your skin. “Milk has been shown to stimulate the production of testosterone in people who consume it, and increased testosterone can make acne worse. Milk contains its own natural hormones, such as estrogen, which have a direct effect on hormone balance.”
If you’ve switched from cow’s milk to almond or soy milk and are still experiencing breakouts, you’ll be surprised to learn why. As it turns out, even those milk substitutes can be responsible behind the hormonal decline because they both contain high amounts of estrogen-like compounds. Be careful with milk in general and do your research if you have a history of hormonal imbalances before choosing a non-dairy alternative.
While retinol may be known for its anti-aging properties, it can also help prevent acne breakouts. “Retinol increases cell turnover and removes impurities from your skin,” Tedaldi says.

Levine added, “Even if your skin is doing well, you have to keep up your skin care routine.” “This means continuing to use your retinoid, such as Differin Acne Treatment Gel ($13), in addition to regular sunscreen or sunscreen. In addition to clearing existing acne, Differin Gel helps prevent acne by reducing clogged pores.”
It’s the key to keeping your pores clean and free of dead skin cells, bacteria, dirt and debris, mixing with the oil on your skin’s surface and preventing sweat from forming. Recommend a mild but effective chemical cleaner instead of a mechanical cleaner like Scrub Levin.
“If your skin is irritated and resistant to exfoliation, try alpha-hydroxide or salicylic acid two to three times a week,” says Levine. Salicylic acid works by deep cleansing the pores and AAAs work to remove dead skin. For salicylic acid spot treatments, we like Origin Super Spot Remover ($19). And for AHAs, try a mild lactic acid treatment like Sunday Riley’s Good Genes Treatment ($85).
Lactic acid is an alpha-hydroxy acid that is effective in whitening the skin. Its molecules are slightly larger than glycolic acid, which means it works a little slower and doesn’t penetrate the skin’s outer layer as easily.

For those who like mechanical makeup, Teddy recommends using an easy-to-remove cream. “Wash well, but don’t wipe your face,” she said. “You can use clean water to wash away the dirt during the day.”
The more you sweat, the worse your zit cream and skincare tendencies get, right? But instead of using serums and creams on that area, create a small mixture of a few products so that you don’t disturb your skin protection in the process. The next time a rash occurs, apply a small amount of salicylic acid (to remove toxins), benzoyl peroxide (to kill bacteria) and 1% hydrocortisone (to reduce redness) to the affected area, encouraging treatment without overdoing it.
Benzyl peroxide is an organic acid in the peroxide family used to treat acne due to its keratolytic, moderate comedotic and antibacterial properties, including proven reduction of P. acnes and Staph. Aureus on the skin.
Just like slapping a Band-Aid on a small cut or wound to protect it from the elements while it heals, hydrocolloid patches do the same for acne scars. Although these stickers (aka zit stickers) aren’t effective enough to completely get rid of a zit on their own, they’re a great bonus treatment to have on hand for a number of reasons. If you can’t cover your face with your hands during a breakup (who can?), cover the area with this little sticker so you don’t mess yourself up and make the problem worse. While the adhesive acts as a protective shield between your dirty fingers and cracks, it draws additional oil into the area due to hydrocolloid wear. Try Peace Out Acne Spot Dots ($19), which contain salicylic acid and vitamin A to clear pores and stimulate skin renewal.
Reasons Your Acne Won’t Go Away
More is not necessarily better when it comes to fighting acne. When you use too many acne products, your skin’s defenses are compromised. When the barrier is breached, bacteria can enter and cause skin infections. So when it comes to treating acne, keep it simple and gentle and apply only what you need: a gentle cleansing foam, a mild moisturizer, a lotion, and a spot treatment.
Try the creams and facials mentioned above, and use a cream like Vanicreme Gentle Facial Cleanser ($9) that’s gentle enough for the most sensitive skin types to cleanse. It can be hard to find a good moisturizer for oily and acne-prone skin, but with this product, we’ve found something that solves our PCA woes. Marigold Flower Oil, Lemongrass Leaf and Cucumber Extract contains Vitamin A to help reduce redness or inflammation and give you the skin you deserve.
