Transfer Icloud Backup To Google Drive – Michael Muchmore Senior Software Expert Michael Muchmore Computer Hardware My experience is good, but not very useful without innovative software. I’ve been reviewing software since 2008 and still enjoy seeing what’s new in video and image editing software and how operating systems change over time. I had the honor of highlighting the cover story of the latest print edition of PC Magazine, a review of Windows 7, and I have witnessed all the wins and failures that Microsoft has made up until the latest Windows 11. The iCloud Drive file sync and storage service is worth using, especially if you’re committed to Apple’s ecosystem, but it doesn’t quite match the competition from Google and Microsoft.

How To Backup Contacts From Android And Iphone To Google Drive
Apple’s cloud storage and file sync service, iCloud Drive, is mainly for Apple devices and apps, but you can also use it in a browser and on non-Cupertino computers. iCloud Drive is a component for synchronizing iCloud folders – Apple’s umbrella cloud service. Files are automatically synced to all devices signed in to your account, including iOS devices, Macs, and Windows computers, but not Android. iCloud Drive lets you create folders for your files and provides online storage for Apple’s productivity apps, including Pages, Numbers, and Keynote. iCloud Drive is as refined as Apple’s design, but it’s less capable than competition from Google Drive and Microsoft OneDrive, our Editors’ Choice winner.
If you use Apple devices and office apps for productivity, iCloud Drive is an attractive choice because it is tightly integrated with them on all supported platforms. In fact, it’s so tightly integrated into the Apple ecosystem that many people who use it may not even realize they’re doing it. It also works on Windows computers and on the web. However, if you use an Android device or want more complete online productivity apps, Google Drive or Microsoft OneDrive might be better for you.

If you have an iOS device, Apple iCloud starts you off with 5GB of space, just like OneDrive offers to all comers. Not only iCloud Drive files, but other iCloud services count toward your iCloud allowance, including photos and backups from your iPhone or iPad. If you don’t have an Apple device, you get 1 GB for free. Paid accounts start at 99 cents a month, which buys just 50GB, while $2.99 gets you 200GB and $9.99 buys a whopping 2TB. Google matches these options with its Google One pricing plans.

A more recent purchase option is to sign up for an Apple One plan. This gives you access to other Apple digital media, including Apple Music, Apple TV+, streaming arcade games. Pricing starts at $14.95 per month for an individual plan that includes service with 50GB of iCloud storage (which seems pretty modest for the price). The family plan costs $19.95 per month and allows up to five users with 200GB of storage. The Premier plan costs $29.95 per month and you get 2TB of storage and access to Apple News+ and Fitness+. The plans offer decent savings compared to buying the service components separately, but there’s no annual commitment discount like others offer, and they’re not a buy if you’re only interested in online storage.

By comparison, Dropbox starts you off with just 2GB of free space, while Dropbox Pro offers 2TB for $11.99 per month or $99 per year. SugarSync offers less storage, with 250GB priced at $9.99 per month. Box provides a generous 10GB of space, but its paid plan for individuals costs $10 per user per month and comes with just 100GB of online storage.
Google Drive Or Icloud: Which Is The Best Choice For You
Apple iCloud Drive is more comparable to Google Drive and Microsoft OneDrive because it is part of a larger platform. Google’s storage allocation starts at 15GB for free, but the options and pricing plans are complicated because there are many rules about what counts as your quota. Exceptions are mostly in your favor. Documents created by Google, such as Google Docs and Sheets, do not count against your space limit, although email attachments (including spam) do. If you need more Google Drive space, you can get 100GB for $1.99 a month, 200GB for $2.99, or 2TB for $9.99 — the same monthly price iCloud charges.
OneDrive offers 5 GB of storage for free. You pay just $6.99 per month for 1TB, and along with that, Microsoft is introducing a subscription to Microsoft 365. This is great because it lets you download full Word, Excel, and PowerPoint applications. The $9.99 per month OneDrive family plan gives you five accounts, each with its own 1TB of storage and Office app downloads.
Apple iCloud Drive requires at least Mac OS X 10.10 Yosemite, iOS 8 and Windows 7 to run on a PC. Apple doesn’t offer an iCloud Drive app for Android, so needless to say, it’s less of a platform solution than DropBox, Google Drive, or OneDrive.
Setting up iCloud Drive on a Windows PC is as easy as setting up any other sync service. You download and install the iCloud Control Panel application, which creates folders in the main user folder for iCloud Drive and iCloud Photos. To start syncing, create an account or sign in with your existing Apple ID. A system tray icon is also installed, from where you can open specific folders. These use custom icons rather than standard folder icons. Any files you add to the iCloud Drive folder or its subfolders will appear on all your other computers and iOS devices where you’ve enabled iCloud Drive and signed in to the same account.

On Macs, iCloud works a little differently and is less straightforward than standard sync services. There is no need to install an application because iCloud Drive, for example, is built into the operating system. Setting up your new Mac guides you through iCloud settings; otherwise, you need to go to System Preferences > iCloud and sign in with your Apple ID, then select iCloud Drive. When you do this, an icon that looks like a folder or mounted drive appears in the Favorites section of the Finder. It can also serve as a backup if Desktop and Documents is checked in Preferences.
You can move files, create subfolders, and manage local documents to this iCloud Drive. If you use Pages, Numbers, or other Apple apps that use iCloud Drive for storage, you’ll also see folders for those apps’ documents. What you won’t see is other data that may count against your iCloud space, such as iPhone backups.
In System Preferences for iCloud, you can see how much storage space you’re using. Hover over any of the color-coded blocks on the progress bar to see what’s taking up that space. Within this setting, you can also choose to include or exclude data related to various programs installed on your computer, such as TextEdit, Preview, QuickTime Player, and iMovie. Photos are handled separately, under iCloud and not iCloud Drive, although there’s nothing stopping you from uploading photos to iCloud Drive and they still take up the same storage space.
As stated at the beginning, iCloud Drive is a file-syncing subset of iCloud itself. It’s this separation between what’s in iCloud and what’s in iCloud Drive that can cause confusion. Photos, contacts, notes, and reminders are backed up to iCloud, while data from TextEdit, iMovie, and Mail is in iCloud Drive. If most of us had to guess which apps store their data in iCloud versus iCloud Drive, we’d fail miserably.

Another issue is how quickly the free allowance runs out, especially if you have your iPhone and Mac set up to sync. It won’t be long before you start seeing system messages on your phone and computer telling you that you’re running low, so either update or stop uploading backups. Apple makes it hard for an iOS or Mac user to argue against buying a storage plan, especially if you’re an iPhone user who likes to take live photos.
ICloud lacks publishing, except for the files you create in Apple’s iWork product apps – Pages, Numbers and KeyNote. Other cloud storage, file syncing, and online backup services we’ve tested recently involve some form of file versioning.
On the web, iCloud Drive is one of the icon options in the iCloud.com main menu. Here, you can view, download, and upload files that sync with any Apple device you own and other instances of iCloud—such as computers with iCloud Utility installed or any browser that’s open to
