Protein shakes are usually made with frozen fruit, a protein source such as protein powder or Greek yogurt, and water such as almond milk.

Smoothies and protein shakes are similar, although shakes are sometimes more bitter than smoothies.

Although you can buy pre-made protein shakes, my favorite way to make them is at home, so you have complete control over the ingredients.

All you need for this recipe are bananas, strawberries, cauliflower, milk, protein powder and Greek yogurt. You can make them vegetarian or not, fat or thin, whatever you want!

Banana. I recommend using frozen bananas because they make this super flavorful, but if you’re tired, fresh will work just as well. Make sure to use a little less milk.

Strawberries. Frozen strawberries work well here. Feel free to sub for any other fruit, but strawberry banana is a classic!

Cauliflower. I like to sneak in some kind of veggie in almost every recipe. You can skip the cauliflower, but I promise you won’t taste it, and it helps make the banana protein super soft!

Milk. Any type of milk will work here. I used soy milk for a little extra protein, but you can use almond, oat or regular cow’s milk.

Protein powder. I like to use vanilla bean protein, but whey protein or whatever you have available will work. I recommend sticking to vanilla for the best experience.

Greek yogurt. Dairy or non-dairy yogurt will add extra protein and give it a milkshake-like texture.

Making smoothies and protein shakes couldn’t be easier, which is why I love them so much!

All you have to do is add all the ingredients to a high speed blender and blend until smooth. I like to let the blender run for a minute or so to make sure everything is pulverized. No one wants a chunky shake!

A stand mixer works well, it’s not strong enough that you’ll need more water to combine.

CHOCOLATE. For the chocolate protein, reduce the vanilla protein and add a tablespoon of cocoa powder to increase the chocolate flavor. Very nice.

MEDICINES FOR WOOD. Peanut butter makes everything better. And banana butter is one of the best ingredients. For a change, I recommend adding 1-2 tablespoons of peanut butter to this recipe.

BANANAS. You can skip the fruit here and just get a banana to be the star of the show.

COFFEE. Fill the milk without milk and cold brew coffee and leave the strawberries. This recipe is even better with a spoonful of peanut butter!

It depends on what you put in it! There are protein shakes out there that can be loaded with weird ingredients and added sugar.

I tried to be very careful with the ingredients here and added healthy foods from fruit, protein and fat from yogurt and hemp seeds.

Once ready, this protein shake can be refrigerated for about 24 hours, but is served fresh.

You can make it ahead of time by putting all the ingredients except the milk in a freezer safe bag, then throwing it in your blender with the milk and blending!

Everyone! This isn’t the cheapest, so I recommend serving it with a bowl of oatmeal for breakfast, or having hard-boiled eggs on the side.

My favorite way to take this recipe is as a post-workout snack, but both are great for breakfast, school, or mid-day. There is no time to drink protein shakes!
