Average Cost Of Trip To Iceland – How much does a trip to Iceland cost? Figuring out a budget for your trip to Iceland can be a daunting task, so I want to make the process as easy as possible by breaking down your budget and helping you set realistic cost expectations for your upcoming trip to Iceland. To summarize the cost of my trip to Iceland, I’ve saved all my receipts for my 4-day trip and here’s what it cost. After visiting three times, I am adding other fun facts here as well.

Depending on your needs and interests, your Iceland budget may look different than mine. However, it is a great resource for figuring out how much money you need. Although Iceland has a reputation for being an expensive country, I’m sure if you plan ahead and budget accordingly, you’ll have a great time in one of my favorite places in the world.

I bought a flight and accommodation package on Expedia six months in advance. I also used a $25 Expedia+ coupon from all the points I collected.

I was flying Delta Air Lines and stayed at the Loft Hostel. Hostels in Iceland are not as cheap as in other parts of Europe, but they are still a viable option. If hostels aren’t your thing, find hotels and inns in Reykjavík.

I booked the flight and accommodation separately for the second trip to Iceland. I fly Icelandair and book my flight three months before departure. My round-trip ticket to Reykjavik from New York was $273.45. At the time, it was the cheapest flight I had seen to Reykjavik on a non-budget airline. Plus, flying with Icelandair means the first checked bag is free! The average flight from New York to Reykjavik costs more than $400.

On this trip, I stayed at Kex Hostel Reykjavík in a six-bed female dorm for 6,800 ISK or $63.11 USD per night. I saved $36.10 USD this time by finding amazing flight deals and booking essentials separately. We recommend signing up for Thrifty Traveler Premium to find incredible flights around the world.

For my third trip to Iceland, I booked a flight with WOW air for $176.76 USD and stayed at Captain Reykjavik Ránargata. Unfortunately WOW air is not working in 2019.

The Gray Line Iceland Airport Express is one of the easiest ways to get to Reykjavik from Keflavik International Airport. The bus journey takes 45 minutes and there is free Wi-Fi on board. Order your ticket at the counter or pre-confirm your reservation online.

Children 12-17 pay half price and children 11 and under are free. Departures are scheduled 25-45 minutes after the flight’s arrival, so even if you arrive late at night or early in the morning, buses are always available. Flybus is another bus alternative. It is a little more expensive.

With Gray Line Iceland Airport Express you have two options. The “Terminal to Terminal” service will take you to the Gray Line bus terminal at Holtagariar 10. Door-to-door service will take you to your hotel or close to your guesthouse.

Gray Line Iceland also offers promo codes directly on their website. On my second trip to Iceland, I booked the Snaefellsnes Cave and Peninsula Exploration tour and saved 10% with the promo code “LABOR10”.

While I save money on breakfast (including my hostel stay), I would recommend budgeting $20-$35 per meal. Instead, my neighbor bought $80 worth of lamb. I know it’s crazy!

Tax is not mandatory in Iceland. In fact, Icelanders don’t buy at all because it is included in the price along with taxes. If you feel your server or bartender is going too far, feel free to turn them away, but there is no obligation or expectation. You may see tip jars in coffee shops, but you don’t have to tip if you don’t want to.

Don’t forget that you don’t have to buy bottled water in Iceland. The water is clean and you can get it for free everywhere. My tour guide encouraged me to drink water from the glacial lagoon – and that’s okay.

The free History and Culture Trail is a great introduction to Iceland’s cities, culture and history. Best of all, the guides are knowledgeable Icelandic historians. During the walking tour, you will pass through the most historical part of the city, including the oldest quarter and the oldest cemetery. If I had missed this tour, I would have missed so many hidden gems. At the end of the tour, set your price and access in any currency.

Day trips in Iceland are expensive, but the good news is that I’ve also found plenty of cheap things to do in Reykjavik if you’re on a budget.

I pre-booked the Silfra snorkeling tour with DIV.IS. If you have aGoPro camera, take it with you. This way you can save money on photos and videos without paying extra.

If you want to see the Icelandic landscape, it is worth visiting the countryside. Many people recommend renting a car in Iceland, but going through a guide is informative and convenient. If I am alone, I will miss you so much!

Having a drink or two can add up quickly in Iceland. A beer costs around $11.

Loft Hostel has one of my favorite bars in Reykjavik. They offer a wide selection of Scandinavian beers and on Fridays you can catch live music. Their rooftop patio is also a great place to view the city skyline.

A friend introduced me to Bar Ölsmiðjan, a dive bar where a beer costs only $5.48 USD or 590 ISK!

How much does it cost to go to Iceland? When I added up all my expenses, I spent $1,240 USD for my 4 day trip. To my surprise and relief, I decided to spend only 4 days in Iceland. The more time you spend in Iceland, the more time you will have. The average cost of a trip to Iceland is around $300 per day including flights and accommodation.

Food, alcohol, and activities are the most expensive budget categories, but I’m in awe of Natasha at World Pursuit who spent a week in Iceland and only spent $100! However, I don’t regret my trip financially. I was delighted to visit one of the top destinations on my travel wish list.
