Bottom Level: Background Research Expose yourself to something new in/about your field. Read a paper, attend a lecture, schedule an appointment, etc. Make sure you understand this new idea by making a diagram or writing a short summary in your own words. (p. 224)
Cal Newport tracks the hours he spends each month thinking about key problems (in his case, research problems). “The strategy of tracking hours helped focus my attention on what I was producing.” (pp. 35, 213-214)
Make your life more purposeful. This is a practical, no-nonsense book that, from the outset, aims to dispel the myth that everyone should only do what they love.
Newport believes that instead of jumping headlong into a career we think we’ll be passionate about, we should be a little more practical. He suggests that any career can be successful if it provides us (at least in the long term) with three main factors:
These factors are not unique to Newport’s work – they are also mentioned in Dan Pink’s book Drive. They are essentially just modified versions of the three basic needs identified in Self-Determination Theory, a psychological theory of human motivation and personality.
By identifying these factors, Newport explores practical options for achieving them in your career. Diving into a career you feel passionate about can often mean you’re actually lacking one or more of the three factors, he explains. Unless the factors can eventually be obtained, you will likely find the work unsatisfying, even if you started out with a strong passion for it.

Admittedly, the book is somewhat biased towards Newport’s area of expertise – academia. Although artistic pursuits are mentioned, they are somewhat neglected. Depending on your background and personal perspective, you may not agree with some of his views.
Whether you fully, partially or completely disagree with Newport’s views on careers, his practical advice is likely to come in handy. He draws on some interesting case studies and his own experiences to compile some very useful advice on how to find fulfillment in your career.
It was this book that made me look at the pursuit of passion as less of a quest and more of an experiment. I highly recommend it.
